The song "Clairvoyance" by Doc Holiday & Twilight" has never played back correctly in any app I've used that's built on BASS.

For example, when VUPlayer or XMPlay play pattern 12 (around the 1:50 mark), you can hear a random out-of-key piano chord, which is clearly wrong.

By comparison, OpenMPT and libopenmpt play that pattern correctly.

I can't hear anything obviously wrong in the BASS or XMPlay (latest versions) playback of that file, but perhaps I'm not listening closely enough. Should it be obvious or is it subtle? What BASS and XMPlay versions are you currently using? If you don't already have it, you can get the latest XMPlay build here:

If you still hear the problem with that, please confirm the exact row and channel that it's in. You can also try changing the "MOD playback mode" setting (in the MOD options page) to see if that affects it.

It's very obvious and not at all subtle.  It repros with the latest version of XMPlay (which I installed just before posting this bug report, to confirm).

I'll try to record a couple short MP3s and post them up on OneDrive or something so you can hear exactly what I'm hearing.

Alright, please compare the two short MP3 recordings contained in this attached 7-Zip archive.

What BASS and XMPlay versions are you currently using?

XMPlay 3.8.5

If you still hear the problem with that, please confirm the exact row and channel that it's in.

Channel 3, rows 5, 13, 37, and 45.  These rows contain a sample number value (16) but no actual note data, so they should not cause any note to be played.  Instead, BASS plays sample 16 at note F#5 (from the previous row).

You can also try changing the "MOD playback mode" setting (in the MOD options page) to see if that affects it.

"normal" produces the problem.
"FT2" causes the module to play back in mono, but resolves the problem.
"PT1" enables the module to continue playing back in stereo, and also resolves the problem.
"PT1-filter" yields the same behavior as `PT1`.

That's strange, it isn't sounding that like that here. I notice "VUPlayer" in the filename, and it looks like VUPlayer is currently using BASS 2.4.15. For comparison, please download BASS 2.4.17 and try playing the file with the included pre-compiled MODTEST.EXE example (in the C\BIN folder). If that sounds fine, you can then try replacing VUPlayer's BASS.DLL with the 2.4.17 version.

What BASS and XMPlay versions are you currently using?

XMPlay 3.8.5

Please try this latest build:

"PT1-filter" yields the same behavior as `PT1`.

Unlike the FT2 and PT1 modes, the "normal" MOD mode doesn't try to emulate any particular tracker but rather the common/average MOD player. It gets tweaked occasionally when a problematic file appears, so there was probably another similarly affected file that it was tweaked for fairly recently.

I used VUPlayer to make the recording, but XMPlay 3.8.5 repros the exact same problem.

Is it possible you are using a different version of the MOD file that does not contain those same "ghost note" rows?  I'll upload the exact MOD file when I get back to my PC.

I'll also try your suggested builds of XMplay and BASS and report back.

I'm using the CLAIRVOY.MOD file from the link in the first post. I do see the "ghost" notes in it but I don't hear them. Hopefully you won't either with the latest BASS/XMPlay builds!
