mo3enc file formats supported
« on: 9 Apr '24 - 13:10 »
I understand activity on here isn't what it used to be, but I only recently found this great program for compressing my large collection of MOD type files.
So far I have converted my MOD, XM, S3M, & IT file format collections to MO3. The space saved has been enormous.

Does the eoncoder support any other formats than the above listed in the readme?
Also any file ending in MOD is supported for conversion, no matter the tracker it was composed with?

Many thanks for any help, & well done on a great utility.

As well as those 4 formats, the MTM and MPTM formats are also supported (MPTM is basically an extended IT). There have been a lot of little variations of the .MOD format, so I'm not sure about all .MOD files being supported, but the vast majority should be. The MO3 encoder will tell you if it doesn't recognise/support a given file.

It should also be noted that by design, a lot of nuance is lost when converting a file to MO3; Some fingerprinting techniques to figure out which tracker was used to create a file involve data that is lost after converting the file to MO3, so using this fingerprint to adjust playback compatibility is no longer possible. For example, in an S3M file it is possible to tell whether it was made with a GUS or SoundBlaster in ScreamTracker 3, which can be important for some playback quirks, but this information is no longer present in MO3 files. With storage space being cheaper than ever, I would strongly recommend against converting entire libraries of modules to MO3 without manually verifying that the result still sounds as intended.
