I just wanted to add my voice of thanks along with everybody else, because this soundfont simply rocks! In 20 years, I have not herad a better-sounding general soundfont.

Thanks, and glad you liked it Smiley

I used that exact SoundFont for the little bit of my own stuff that I've released on my web page throughout the past few years. Note that ALL of the links are still broken at my web site (due to my recent web server change), but here are some of my favorites that I've composed (of varying genres):

P.S. Not WeedsGM3 related, but a few more of mine recorded using the Yamaha S-YXG50 software synthesizer (identical to an Yamaha MU50 or an MU80 MIDI module/tone generator):

Thank you.

You're welcome! Smiley

BTW, there is a couple ot dead links - emu.com now redirects to creative.com.

Thanks for the heads-up Smiley

The one link pointing to "General MIDI AWE32 ROM Dump SoundFont, by E-mu Systems (1.1 megabytes)" I already knew about... I kept the original emu.com link, but found another download URL that is directly above the dead emu.com link.

The one pointing to "8MBGM E-mu Rev B SoundFont, by E-mu Systems (7.6 megabytes)" I had forgotten to correct... I'l have to dig up an alternate download link fot that one as well.

Rich, what happened with your site ( http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/ )?

I went through a major server/web space change a short time ago... still trying to get things back in order.

Anyhow, what used to be this:

http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/

...is now this:

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/

You can find everything there Smiley

Eventually there will be a redirector that will point any link that someone surfs to from the CMOO server to the new StartLogic server, but it's currently not working 100% right now.

As an example, if you attempt to surf here:

http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/

...you'll wind up here:

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weedsSoundFonts/

...which of course, should be this:

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/

Still trying to sort that one out Smiley

5  Off Topic / General Discussion / "Downed Intro" Music from "Counter-Strike: Condition Zero" (MIDI Version) on: 29 Sep '11 - 07:52
I sequenced a MIDI version of the song "Downed Intro" (which is the main-menu music of the PC game "Counter-Strike: Condition Zero"), and recorded an MP3 of it from my MIDI hardware. Came out pretty nice sounding Smiley

Yeah, I know... take an original MP3 from a game, sequence a MIDI file of it, and then recorded the MIDI version to an MP3 LOL!

Anyhow, snag the recorded MP3 of the MIDI file here -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Counter_Strike/Music/Counter-Strike_Condition_Zero_-_Downed_Intro_-_Rich_Weeds_Nagel.mp3 ( http://tinyurl.com/DownedIntroMIDIMP3 ).

The original MIDI file that I sequenced is here -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Counter_Strike/Music/Counter-Strike_Condition_Zero_-_Downed_Intro_-_Rich_Weeds_Nagel.mid ( http://tinyurl.com/DownedIntroMIDI ).

Hi Keith,

I had to write in to say a heartfelt thank you for sharing this general midi soundfont.  It is truly amazing.  I did some listening tests with...
CrisisGeneralMidi3.01.sf2
SGM-V2.01.sf2
merlin_symphony.sf2
GeneralUser GS SoftSynth v1.43.sf2
ChoriumRevA.SF2
WeedsGM3.sf2

I also included the pianos...

Equinox_Grand_Pianos.sf2
qd Old Lady release 2.1.sf2
maestro_concert_grand_v2.sf2
TrachtmanSteinC_XFade2.sf2

My conclusion is that WeedsGM3.sf2 stands out as simply the most responsive musically.

Well, there you have the opinion of someone who uses midis mainly as a cheap way of exploring the world of classical and ragtime music and in particular listening to converted piano rolls.

Thanks for the kudos, and I'm glad you liked it! Smiley Hehe, like I said in the blurb on my web site, "Made for composers and musicians, by a composer and musician..."... in other words, "realism" means "real" <grin> Smiley

I have no musical talent of my own, or indeed technical ability of any worth so I hope my opinion counts a little.

Hey, the opinion of *anyone* who listens to MIDI files is highly valued Smiley

Yes it does and it's weird because I downloaded one bagpipe sound which was a .sf2 which worked but no others work.

That's rather strange. If an app supports SF2 format SoundFonts, it _should_ be able to use any of them. Anyhow, I dunno about mine, all you could do is download and try it, and see if it works Smiley

One small thing is that the sysex messages listed there are XG-specific, rather than GS/XG. GS has its own sysex messages for that stuff, as does GM2.

A-OK, thanks for the info Ian Smiley Like I said, I wasn't too familar with the GS stuff, and was thinking that the various effects parameters and effects types were for GS as well.

I'll change the "(GS/XG)" blurbs to simply "(XG)" ASAP Smiley

I don't think you need to bother with that stuff though as it's not adding anything.

That's what I was thinking as well.

Support for some XG variation effects appearing in a future release isn't out of the question Smiley

That would be absolutely AWESOME Smiley

Like I replied previously, I only recently have been twiddling with the XG stuff (with the S-YXG50 softsynth, which for all practical purposes sounds EXACTLY like DB50XG daughterboard, or an MU50 external tone generator).

Without any of the variation effects (specifically the distortion and overdrive effects), the pop/rock instruments in any of those synthesizers is really weak IMHO. But, add some of the "Tube Amp Sim" variation effect (or another of the overdrive distortion effects)... and WOW!

I recently had been wanting to buy one of the old XG tone generators such as the MU80, but those things are too much money for their age <grin>.

The MU80 has "in" and "out" jacks that allow one to route an external source _through_ the effects processors (such as a microphone, electric guitar, etc...), IOW it will act just like an external effects electric guitar "stomp box".

Hehe, I thought that it would sound really excellent piping my SBLive (with my WeedsGM3 SoundFont loaded into it) *through* the MU80... that Strat Marshall and Garcia Distortion Guitar in my SoundFont would REALLY come ALIVE then! Smiley

Anyhow Ian, I'll shutup now... you've got me drooling all over myself now <grin>! Smiley

BTW Ian,

I just *KNOW* that this is beyond the scope of BASSMIDI.DLL (for obvious reasons), but man, it would unbelievably cool if it could support all of the various XG "Variation" effects... especially the overdrive/distortion variation effects (tube amp simulation/stack amp simulation/etc..).

Anyhow, I'm sure that the XG variation effects probably couldn't be incorporated into BASSMIDI.DLL, but I'm just simply daydreaming here <grin> Smiley

Do any of these soundfonts like the bagpipe ones work in garageband? I need something that works in garageband.

I really have no idea (I'm not familar with GarageBand). Does it normally support SoundFonts (".SF2" files)?

As you suspected, the "XG All Parameters Reset" (F0 43 10 4C 00 00 7F 00 F7) sysex isn't currently supported. "XG Mode On" also resets things, so an additional "Reset" message seems a bit unnecessary. I'll look into it.

Actually, like you, I think that the "Reset" message would be unnecessary as well... as you said, an "XG Mode On" resets things too.

With the BASSMIDI Driver I noticed that any of the valid BASSMIDI.DLL resets and "mode on" messages seemed to reset *EVERYTHING*, so the "XG Mode On" wouldn't be needed

P.S. I *hope* that I pretty much got things right with that MIDI data chart Smiley I'm not too familar with almost anything non-GM <grin>, and only recently (within the past few months or so) been twiddling with XG type stuff (with the Yamaha S-YXG50 softsynth).

BTW, you've prolly seen this before, but attached is a ZIP with an old document (older Windows "HLP" file format), the "Beggar's DB50XG SysEx Guide: Deluxe Edition"... lists almost anything and everything (MIDI controller and sysex) that XG compatible hardware (as well as the S-YXG50) can do Smiley

That looks about right. Did you painstakingly try all possible events to derive that list, or did you cheat by looking at the BASS_MIDI_StreamEvent function documentation? Smiley

Hehe, you caught me/found me out... I'm nothing but a sorry cheater <grin> Smiley What started it though, was my experimentation with the reverb parameters (that I mentioned in the XMPlay MIDI Plugin thread).

I also refered to various Yamaha XG docs that I have (the "Beggar's DB50XG SysEx Guide Deluxe Edition", and another XG doc that I previously typed up -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yamaha_XG/YXG50Utl.txt ).

Here are a few more things that could be added to the list...

   Drum key level (NRPN MSB=26)
   XG chorus parameters (rate/depth/feedback/delay/reverb)
   Scale tuning

Thanks for the info... I'll definitely be adding them to the chart ASAP Smiley

I had a hunch that the chorus parameters might just work, but I never tried them (as they weren't mentioned in the BASSMIDI documentation).

Also, the "GS/TG300B Mode On" (F0 43 71 7E 09 01 F7) sysex isn't actually supported. Perhaps you meant GS Reset (F0 41 10 42 12 40 00 7F 00 41 F7)?

Ahhh... I'll change that ASAP Smiley

I was assuming that the "GS Mode ON" was the correct one (instead of the "GS All Parameters Reset"), as I knew that BASSMIDI supported "XG Mode On" (F0 43 10 4C 00 00 7E 00 F7); but knew (or at least, I thought) that it didn't support the "XG All Parameters Reset" (F0 43 10 4C 00 00 7F 00 F7).

That's why I listed the "GS Mode On" instead of the "GS All Parameters Reset".

Thanks for the info, Ian Smiley

Folks,

I threw this together the other day; a MIDI Implementation Chart and system exclusive messages list for the XMPlay MIDI Plugin, BASSMIDI, and the BASSMIDI Driver. It may not be 100% accurate, and doesn't list but the very basic XG system exclusive messages that they support... but it might prove useful to someone nonetheless Smiley

16  Off Topic / General Discussion / Complete Eternal DOOM MIDI Soundtrack Released! on: 3 May '11 - 17:14
After almost a decade and a half, Team Eternal's complete Eternal DOOM MIDI Soundtrack (containing all of the revamped original MIDI files) has been publicly released!

The archive contains the complete original MIDI soundtrack that I composed for Team Eternal's "Eternal DOOM" back in 1996 through 1997. Also included in the archive are several bonus MIDI files, images, and other miscellaneous Eternal DOOM and Eternal DOOM Soundtrack related material.

More information about the Eternal DOOM MIDI Soundtrack can be found at http://www.richnagel.net/#eternal_doom_soundtrack (or http://www.simpilot.net/~richnagel/#eternal_doom_soundtrack ) on the Internet.

Downloads can be found at the usual DOOM related FTP and web sites:

17  Developments / XMPlay / Re: XM Play Midi Plugin problems and suggestions on: 19 Apr '11 - 22:14
An "Active voices" display has also been added to the "MIDI mixer" window

That's a really neat and handy feature, Ian! Smiley

There are quite a few hardware based soundfont compatible sound cards that suffer from the problem that has been described above... clipped notes due to the amount of actual samples being played within the soundfont.

Even though the sound card's polyphony might be 32 (or 64), a lot of the drivers/hardware for these cards treat each sample as a polyphonic note... hence clipped notes, even though the original MIDI file is no where near 32 notes being simultaneously played.

Even my Sound Blaster Live (Value Edition, with the latest/last Creative Labs Windows XP drivers installed) suffers from this problem... I have a few of my MIDI compositions where I had to use two MIDI output ports to prevent the clipping problem ("SB Live! Synth A" and "SB Live! Synth B"), even though the actual polyphony in the song was 32 (or less).

One example: the MIDI that I recorded this MP3 from -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/X-Formers.mp3 ... Hehe, after watching that new feature of the MIDI plugin (using my „Weeds„ General MIDI SoundFont v3.0), I saw numbers as high as 72 (even though the polyphony of the original MIDI is only around 35 or so)!

Anyhooo, enough rambling... thanks for that new feature, it's quite handy! Smiley

Hehe, I just realized that the Yamaha XG utility "XGEdit 95" is *extremely* handy for editing quite a few of the XG parameters of MIDI files for playback using BASSMIDI, and the XMPlay MIDI plugin Smiley

A LOT easier than all of the sysex gobbledygook <grin> Smiley

19  Developments / XMPlay / Re: XMPlay MIDI plugin on: 11 Apr '11 - 16:00
BASSMIDI and the XMPlay plugin should support the same events as each other. If you have a MIDI file that exhibits a difference, please upload it to have a look at here... ftp.un4seen.com/incoming/

Thanks for the info Smiley It's probably not necessary to upload a sample MIDI... I'm thinking that it might have been hard(er) to hear the reverb effects with the XMPlay MIDI plugin because of the additional reverb effects that XMPlay itself has. I wasn't sure if the effects were being played/processed by the plugin, but now I'm thinking that they are Smiley

Btw, not all of those XG reverb parameters are currently supported. The following are: Reverb Time, Initial Delay, Hpf Cutoff, Lpf Cutoff, Rev Return.

Thanks for the info Smiley

@Ian,

I was wondering if the XMPlay MIDI Plugin supports some of the sysex commands that BASSMIDI does? In particular, the following Yamaha XG sysex commands (which sound to me like that they are recognized by BASSMIDI.DLL, but it's kind of hard to tell (hear) if the MIDI plugin does):
