It uses the default Windows mixing device if you install no other output plug-in.
It uses Direct Sound when you install the Direct Sound plug-in and tell XMPlay to use it.
It uses WASAPI when you install the WASAPI plug-in and tell XMPlay to use it.

no, it doesn't. I can guess there wasn't enough picthfork when requesting the STFU option.

Sure it does; actually there are several ways to make it STFU. To discover them all, you should RTFM.
