Liking the Wind Chimes. :)

Glad ya liked 'em :)

The original sample for them I recorded from one of the pipes of an actual set that I have here. I then used an old piece of software "Wind Chimes" for windows to recreate the chimes that I and my father have (the tuning of the chimes, number of pipes, center pendulum/no pendulum, etc...), and recorded the output to a MIDI. Heh... they sound just like my (and my father's) real wind chimes :)

Dunno if you liked the bagpipes. Bagpipes are an "aquired" taste, and lately I've been in a bagpipey sort of mood <grin>. Wish I had a real set, but they're WAY to freakin' expensive (for a decent Great Highlander set at least)... hence the next best thing; a soundfont :)

Highland Bagpipes SoundFont

...and yet another soundfont, "Highland Bagpipes". This one is a single set of bagpipes (verses the bagpipes ensemble included in the "Bagpipes Marching Band" soundfont that I uploaded earlier).

The ZIP also includes 33 MIDI files that really show off the soundfont :)

Do any of these soundfonts like the bagpipe ones work in garageband? I need something that works in garageband.

I really have no idea (I'm not familar with GarageBand). Does it normally support SoundFonts (".SF2" files)?

Yes it does and it's weird because I downloaded one bagpipe sound which was a .sf2 which worked but no others work.

That's rather strange. If an app supports SF2 format SoundFonts, it _should_ be able to use any of them. Anyhow, I dunno about mine, all you could do is download and try it, and see if it works :)

Rich,

I had to write in to say a heartfelt thank you for sharing this general midi soundfont.  It is truly amazing.  I did some listening tests with...
CrisisGeneralMidi3.01.sf2
SGM-V2.01.sf2
merlin_symphony.sf2
GeneralUser GS SoftSynth v1.43.sf2
ChoriumRevA.SF2
WeedsGM3.sf2
I also included the pianos...
Equinox_Grand_Pianos.sf2
qd Old Lady release 2.1.sf2
maestro_concert_grand_v2.sf2
TrachtmanSteinC_XFade2.sf2
My conclusion is that WeedsGM3.sf2 stands out as simply the most responsive musically.  Many of the others seem initially impressive in one way or another but tend not to reproduce intonations as well.  Of the others I rather liked the GeneralUser piano and TrachmansteinC, also the SGM-V2 acoustic guitars impressed a little.  Having said that I must reiterate that the "musicality" for want of a better word, of the WeedsGM3 overrides the sweeter notes of those other soundfonts.

Well, there you have the opinion of someone who uses midis mainly as a cheap way of exploring the world of classical and ragtime music and in particular listening to converted piano rolls.  I have no musical talent of my own, or indeed technical ability of any worth so I hope my opinion counts a little.

Keith Logan, the happy chappy

Thanks for the kudos, and I'm glad you liked it! :) Hehe, like I said in the blurb on my web site, "Made for composers and musicians, by a composer and musician..."... in other words, "realism" means "real" <grin> :)

Hey, the opinion of *anyone* who listens to MIDI files is highly valued :)

Rich, what happened with your site (http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/)?

Rich, what happened with your site ( http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/ )?

I went through a major server/web space change a short time ago... still trying to get things back in order.

Anyhow, what used to be this:

http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/

...is now this:

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/

You can find everything there :)

Eventually there will be a redirector that will point any link that someone surfs to from the CMOO server to the new StartLogic server, but it's currently not working 100% right now.

As an example, if you attempt to surf here:

http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/

...you'll wind up here:

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weedsSoundFonts/

...which of course, should be this:

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/SoundFonts/

Still trying to sort that one out :)

Thank you.

You're welcome! :)

BTW, there is a couple ot dead links - emu.com now redirects to creative.com.

Thanks for the heads-up :)

The one link pointing to "General MIDI AWE32 ROM Dump SoundFont, by E-mu Systems (1.1 megabytes)" I already knew about... I kept the original emu.com link, but found another download URL that is directly above the dead emu.com link.

The one pointing to "8MBGM E-mu Rev B SoundFont, by E-mu Systems (7.6 megabytes)" I had forgotten to correct... I'l have to dig up an alternate download link fot that one as well.

Rich -

I just wanted to add my voice of thanks along with everybody else, because this soundfont simply rocks! In 20 years, I have not herad a better-sounding general soundfont. Just in case anybody else needs additional proof:

http://www.doomworld.com/music/d_e3m3.mid (From Doom 1)

 and

http://www3.nvusd.k12.ca.us/education/components/docmgr/download.php?sectiondetailid=2254&fileitem=91&catfilter=32&PHPSESSID=b6a0928a25dbb17197cac2f3abc1cb6f (a bit unweildy, but a great tune, at least in my opinion.)

and

http://moviethemes.net/music/Star_Wars/EP5__Imperial_March__Darth_Vader%27s_Theme.mid

Again, many thanks for this great soundfont.

Joseph.

I used that exact SoundFont for the little bit of my own stuff that I've released on my web page throughout the past few years. Note that ALL of the links are still broken at my web site (due to my recent web server change), but here are some of my favorites that I've composed (of varying genres):

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Lyudmila's_Song.mp3

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/X-Formers.mp3
http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/X-Formers_2.mp3

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Aspen's_Song_Album/Track_01_Aspen's_Song.mp3
(Everything in this directory that the above MP3 is in -> http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Aspen's_Song_Album/ )

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Just_A_Little_Bit_Longer.mp3
http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Fat_Albert_II.mp3

http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/Aspen's_Song_Album/Track_13_Ramblings_of_a_Non-Pianist_(Opus_2).mp3
http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_Music/March_To_War.mp3
http://jasonwilliams400com.startlogic.com/snor/weeds/gsleeves.mp3

P.S. Not WeedsGM3 related, but a few more of mine recorded using the Yamaha S-YXG50 software synthesizer (identical to an Yamaha MU50 or an MU80 MIDI module/tone generator):

Unfortunately the self-extracting sfArk archive is strictly a Windows executable. There MIGHT be some way to run a Windows executable on a Mac, but I'm not sure of the technique... maybe someone can jump in here with a suggestion :)

If that works, it's probably the easier way out but for general "I need some platform independent things from inside a Windows installer"-purposes, Wine does exist for OS X. Several ways of getting it, the one I can vouch for having actually done it is MacPorts. While not perfect for everything, simple apps like installers run just fine.

Eh, I was thinking of suggesting Wine too, but since it was specific I decided to not do it.
But yeah, Wine should be able to make the unpacker work, and then can be removed.
