WMA stream doesn't seek for BBC Radio
« on: 26 Aug '10 - 19:35 »
So BBC Radio has switched their web radio format from RealMedia to Windows Media, I'm testing a few shows out and I can't seem to seek to a specific portion of the show.

WinAmp allows you to.

FYI, XMPlay WMA plugin is currently at rev.12.

Test with any of these streams:

Thanks for reading!

Actually, rev 12a is the most recent one. That doesn't seek either, though.

The server specifies the streams as seekable and XMPlay gets the correct stream length, but it doesn't show a position indicator and it won't allow you to seek. I've never tried to play finite-length WMA streams before, so I'm not sure whether XMPlay currently supports seeking in them. In WMP, it obviously works like a charm, so I guess the underlying Windows Media libraries should be able to do it.

The WMA plugin will usually disable seeking until the entire file is downloaded as seeking tends not to work very well before then, but in this case the file appears to be streamed rather than downloaded. Here's an update to try...
