Hi, I'm a long term XMPlay user but not a forum member (yet!),
Something I have always wanted for XMPlay, but had never thought of asking for, is that it stores the encoder settings separately from the main program settings, ie. similar to how the "Saved Settings" are stored in the "xmplay.set" file. Maybe they could even go into "xmplay.set" instead of having their own dedicated file, to keep the main directory less cluttered.
My reason is that it is good to reset everything once in a while by deleting xmplay.ini, mainly on program updates. Reset everything EXCEPT for the encoder settings that is. Almost all XMPlay settings are simple point-and-click affairs, but the encoder settings are not.
(Sorry, this is off-topic, but I would apply the same principle to the MIDI plugin settings too, as they can also get complex enough that you don't want to lose them.)
Best regards and many thanks for the best player (and encoder front-end!) that there is, Simon

Almost all XMPlay settings are simple point-and-click affairs, but the encoder settings are not. You can save your encoder settings by copying the External=<hexdata> to some other file. If you copy it back into the new xmplay.ini, it should work properly again (given that you haven't changed the paths to the encoders). [edit] So, if I open the album's folder, they might be played in wrong order, unless there is an option to queue them in order of Track Number tag. How about 'List nav - Select same album', 'List sort - Tag - Track' and 'List track - Queue' on the same shortcut? [/edit]

Yet another question on readahead. If a file is fully buffered on load from a usb key (say a .mp3) and looped (always looped), does xmplay still prevents the usb key to be unplugged?
Of course, XMPlay can't physically prevent a USB key being unplugged, but I guess you just want to know whether playback can continue if the USB key is unplugged? I'm not sure, but my guess is probably not. One way to find out Right-click the 'Add file'-button on the Playlist Panel or Extended Playlist to bring up the 'Add directory'-dialog. Is that better?
Thanks for your reply. The particular case is when xmplay is running, but only the tray icon is showing (my normal situation). You can bring up the "Add directory" window from the tray by holding down the "shift" key when you select the "Open / Add file(s)" menu option. Something I have always wanted for XMPlay, but had never thought of asking for, is that it stores the encoder settings separately from the main program settings, ie. similar to how the "Saved Settings" are stored in the "xmplay.set" file. As Dotpitch suggests, you could copy the "External" line for the encoder settings from the old XMPLAY.INI file to the new one. For the MIDI settings, you would copy the entire "[MIDI]" section. Since 3.6, the MIDI settings can actually also be stored in the "Saved Settings", by setting the "Decoder" option to "MIDI" (also see the MIDI plugin config for what's stored in the saved settings). If you just want to reset XMPlay's settings while retaining plugin settings, then rather than removing/renaming the XMPLAY.INI file, you could simply empty the "[XMPlay]" section from the file, minus any stuff that you want to keep, eg. the "External" line. If you want to reset a particular plugin's settings, you would do the same to its section (each plugin has its own section).

One way to find out I think the question was if Windows shows the file on the USB drive as "open" and therefore won't give the OK to safely eject the USB device. In any case, as you say.... one way to find out...

Well, I did try, but had different results. If the zipped file is a module, it remains in memory/the archive isn't locked and I can remove the key; If the zipped file is a mp3/something else, even if it's smaller than the read-ahead limit tthe archive is locked (I suppose) and I can't unplug, even if I set the track to be looped eternally... So I was asking for more info, expecially wanting to do so (unplug the key whileit's still playing the cached file). I do know that if I'll skip to the next song all files in playlist will be marked as dead, but that's no issue.

Thank-you Dotpitch and Ian for your suggestions for backing up encoder and MIDI settings. I'd not noticed the ability to backup MIDI settings in v3.6. Mental note: Always read the documentation... Thank-you.

The "shift" key does not change the "Open / Add file(s)" menu option for me. In both cases, the Open File(s) dialog box is presented, and in both cases, the (Open) Folder field does not have a corresponding "Browse..." button as you would find in all other Windows dialog boxes that open files.

PS Help and various tricks/shortcuts are appreciated, but they do not change the mentioned shortcoming of the Open/Add file(s) dialog itself.

Could you please post a screenshot of what you're missing in XMPlay?

The Add File(s) Dialog needs, next to the Folder field, the button marked "Browse..." in the following:

I just use the box at the top of the dialog box that says "Look in:". If you pull down the arrow at the end, you'll be able to browse from right there.
I guess it isn't an actual button labeled "Browse", but....

That only applies to the File Name field, not the Folder field.

I assumed that the "Folder" field in the "Open File(s)" dialog box was there to open a Folder, just as the Open URL field was there to.... open URLs. But actually, it does not ! It is - oddly enough - just a previously used folders selector (despite the fact that "Look in" drop down also has some previously used folders), Okay, so what is needed there is the word "Previous" in front of "Folder:" as well as change to plural. (Single tense implies another thing to open, whereas plural implies something to pick amongst.) (This explains why people suggested other means to open a single folder.) -- In regards to version, it is 3.6.0.1 - neither web site has any Beta version downloads, nor is there a Beta thread in this Forum, or Version Announcements in this Forum, at least that I can find.

Do you mean the Folder history dropdown box again? I don't see a Folder field here. It is - oddly enough - just a previously used folders selector (despite the fact that "Look in" drop down also has some previously used folders), Note that the 'Look in' dropdown menu is OS specific (it's not that advanced in Win98 or WinXP), and it can also show non-audio folders, while XMPlays own menu will only show folder where you actually loaded files from. Okay, so what is needed there is the word "Previous" in front of "Folder:" as well as change to plural. (Single tense implies another thing to open, whereas plural implies something to pick amongst.) I think 'Folder history' is a better name for that menu than 'Previous folders' or 'Previously used folders'. In regards to version, it is 3.6.0.1 - neither web site has any Beta version downloads, nor is there a Beta thread in this Forum, or Version Announcements in this Forum, at least that I can find. Well, this thread (Suggestions for 3.7) contains most of the development, the other one (3.6 reports, queries and bugs) contains most of the bugfixes. As you can read in the Forum guide - Read before posting...

Folder history is fine - just "folder" implies that it is going to open a folder, just as "URL" is for opening that URL. Actually, the full quote is: Always check that you have the latest version of XMPlay available, your bug/feature might have already been fixed/implemented. On occasion, there may also be an unofficial "in development" update available at: http://www.un4seen.com/stuff/xmplay.exe. You left off the "On occasion" part of the sentence, which implies that the development update is not the latest version referred to in the previous sentence.

"Open File" spawns a standard Windows "Open File" dialog. I'm not sure what you're even talking about here.

That was a purely informative quote, to show you the link. Can you please post a screenshot of your Open file dialog? Just attach it to your post (under Additional Options).Nevermind, I finally figured out what you're after.

Nevermind, I finally figured out what you're after.
The discussion got sidetracked from the original suggestions, which were in my original post: http://www.un4seen.com/forum/?topic=12153.msg86942#msg86942The summary of the discussion on the first suggestion is that I mistook "Folder:" in the Open dialog for a way to open folders of files, so your suggestion of renaming the field "Folder History:" would clarify that. AFAIK, there has not been any discussion of the second suggestion.
