Not sure if this exists already... But it'd be AWESOME with a database which could be used to identify modules (mod) and set playback mode to the one in the database. A certain mod (C-Quence - In-Orbit(extended).mod), sounds offtune in "normal" mode but in Fast Tracker 2 mode it sounds LESS offtune. It would be awesome to have some database which contains these playback types. We could have someone trusted who'd take care of this list. (or a simple web interface to upload your local version and it'd match against the online one and add only new, and those already existing will have to be approved by moderator)
Not sure how useful it would be. If it's only a handful (ie one or two out of millions) then it's kinda pointless.

I think ModArchive is looking like the best of the databases mentioned so far for searchability, but as saga mentioned it doesn't always provide any additional info (artist and genre info is available some of the time from my small sample of checks). Is the artist the main thing that you're looking for? If so, that will usually be somewhere in the file's texts, so perhaps XMPlay can try to extract that, like it does the year. The artist is a bit trickier to detect than the year though. I did implement a basic artist detection system at the same time as the year detection, but it gave mixed results, so it was left out. I'd say it gave a decent result 50% of the time, nothing 45% of time, and rubbish 5% of the time ... I could try resurrecting that if there are no better options. Well, I'm actually looking to obtain as much info as possible. Having artist and year could be enough for now. I think ModArchive is looking like the best of the databases mentioned so far for searchability, but as saga mentioned it doesn't always provide any additional info (artist and genre info is available some of the time from my small sample of checks).
Note that there's also "guessed" artist information (taken from ModLand) available if one is logged into the site, and this is also available when using the XML API - meaning that you'd get artist information for many more tunes than normally visible on the site as a guest. Niceeeee!!!!

How far away are we from a 3.7 release? There have been quite a few important bugfixes since the official 3.6 release, and it's been quite a while...

I generally like there to be at least one big new feature in each new version, but there haven't really been any big additions since 3.6, so I've been holding off the 3.7 release, waiting for inspiration to strike ... But I guess there does come a point where the small additions/tweaks/fixes add up to warrant a version bump.

You don't have to go all the way to 3.7 with the version number. 3.61 is still available.

What, and skip 54 minor version numbers?? How does that make any sense?

I was thinking a little more about multiple playlists implementation. For me a button for "new playlist" can replace the current "save list" button. Left clicking this button would start a new playlist after auto saving the previous. Right clicking the button would show previously auto-saved playlists (stored in the xmplay app-data folder). In addition to that list there should be a few management commands for current playlist . Commands like "Save as" that would act as the current save button, "Rename" and "Remove" to delete playlist from the hard drive and list.

3.6 => 3.61 would be skipping "some" numbers. 3.6.1 would be another possibility, but probably too small a change to indicate what has really happened over the last 1-2 years.

Yeah, but it might be better than hiding all of those changes from the vast majority of users who don't get involved with "beta" software.

<dream> New feature for 3.7? If one day, Ian, you ever decide life is not worth living anymore, add a scripting language to XMPlay. I only recently found out that SAM Broadcaster is Winamp with a whole heap of stuff tacked on, and the best part of SAM, in my opinion at least, is PAL, the scripting language. XMPlay and PAL? Now we're talking! </dream>
(goes and slaps himself in the head for being stupid) (several times)
One new feature I'd like for XMPlay? I really miss Windows Media Players toolbar that is not present in Win7 anymore. It seems it was taken out because nobody used it, but I thought it was the bees knees. How feasible or desirable would something like that be for XMPlay? I may well be in the minority here, but I really like the idea of minimizing my media player, and controlling it from the toolbar.
Just my ideas, anyhow.....

Are you aware that several skins come with a "mini" variant that can be enabled by double-clicking the window? That sounds pretty much like the "toolbar" you're after.

No, I wasn't. I (obviously) haven't looked too closely at the skins section, so I'll pick thru them again, and see if there's something I could use. What I would like is the skin to reside in the toolbar rather than out on the desktop, but beggars (ie people asking for stuff without wanting to contribute in some way) can't be choosers. I'll pick thru the skins section again, and see if something fits the bill. Cheers!

The only thing it needs is a previous track button, but like you said, it's close. I might ask the author of XMPtray how easy it would be to add in.

That's a real nusiance, because I really hate having even a mini skin on my desktop space. When I really get going, I'll have 6 or more windows open at once, and at one point or another, the media player *whatever it is* will get in the way. It was so much more useful to me to have it on the taskbar. Damn.
