It would be great if it was possible to not stop and restart stream playback if you choose "write to disk" from context menu and the selected stream is already playing. This would get rid of some annoying interruptions.
And to bring this to perfection, it would be cool if there could be some kind of "retroactive recording", i.e. keep the played stream content of the last x seconds in memory and then write this stream content also to disk when starting recording. This could be useful for example when you realize that a great tune is playing on an online radio and you want to record the whole tune, but it's been playing for 5 seconds already.

So. Any thoughts on this regarding feasibility?

It isn't possible (or at least it isn't straightforward) to begin writing mid-stream with formats that require headers, eg. OGG. But it could be done with other formats, eg. MP3/AAC Shoutcast streams. Here's an update to try...

This update also allows the writing to be stopped by re-clicking the "Write to disk" option.

Both additions seem to work perfectly with an MP3 stream. Do you have any ideas if this could be combined with my other request (retroactive recording), maybe through a hidden setting?

OK. Here's another update to try...

It adds a "NetBufferOld" XMPLAY.INI option to set an amount (in seconds) of old data to keep buffered (only from Shoutcast streams), and that data will then be written to disk when writing is activated. A "Write to disk" shortcut has also been added for quicker access (than via the menu).

Support for Ad-Lib formats. I know there's Ad-Lib plugin for WinAMP, but it works only partially (for example - .adl files arent played).
My dream is to play all exotic formats using XMPlay...

That's rather a plugin request than a suggestion for the main application. AdPlug works well enough here - if it doesn't support a particular format, why don't you ask the author of the plugin to implement it?

So... are there any plans for a release date for 3.7 or at least 3.6.1? The "official" version is getting quite old.

Yep. What I think I'll do is bump it up to 3.7 in a few weeks time (before Chrimbo). If anyone has any nice (and fairly small ) ideas, feel free to shout them out and I'll see if something can be done about them before the 3.7 release.

How about displaying "Note Fades" (i.e. notes > 120 in IT files) in the pattern vis as "~~~" like in OpenMPT or Schism? Currently they seem to be displayed just like normal notes, e.g. "F#1" (I guess that comes from the fact that the note that OpenMPT and Schism use for saving those fades is F#13).

My personal picks (hopefully qualifying for 'fairly small'):

• Clear stream buffer when paused longer than buffer size
• Cue sheet display in hours
• Use horizontal ellipsis instead of three dots in titles (if in font)
• Auto-sort by album and track number
• Alternative to middle-click (for visuals)

Since the current "stuff" version is always the current development state, it is pretty much going to be the same as the last "stuff" version before the actual release.


Oh, and thinking of it, something small that I've pointed out before: You should either revert to displaying the Cmwt (format version / "compatible with") version instead of Cwt/v ("made with") for IT files in the general view, or at least the Cwt/v should be parsed correctly (not just for OpenMPT). Right now, IT files made with Schism Tracker are displayed as "Impulse Tracker 11.something" because of that.

I second the request for a middle-click alternative.  It is hard using the scroll-wheel on a two-button mouse to send a middle-click without scrolling and messing things up.  I gave up long ago.  I never did figure out what I could do when I was forced into using the trackpad on a laptop.

The update above should include the cue sheet, ellipsis, and album/track sorting changes.

I guess the intention of the 1st idea is that XMPlay should continue downloading internet streams while paused (dropping the existing buffered data) to avoid the connection timing-out? Unfortunately, that might not work well with some formats. For example, it might be that the dropped data from an OGG stream included the beginning/headers of a new bitsteam (that's how title changes are done in OGG), which would mean that it wouldn't be possible to resume. A safer way to "pause" an internet stream is to mute the volume instead, which allows the decoding and downloading to continue as normal in the meantime.

Regarding the vis middle-click alternative, it is also possible to use the 4th or 5th mouse buttons, which are less fiddly but I guess not present for most users. Do you have a particular alternative in mind, eg. perhaps shift + left-click?

The update above should detect IT files created with BeRoTracker and SchismTracker, using the info from your link.

There are are some issue that make that tricky to do. Firstly, the main window can have an irregular shape, which could mean that the attached windows don't actually appear to be touching. But I think the bigger issue is the playlist/DSP panels, eg. a panel may sit over the attached info window.

Have you tried enabling the "Move with main window" option in the "Info window" section of the "Appearance" options page? With that enabled, the info window will follow the main window as it's moved.
