XMPlay ebook
« on: 20 Feb '12 - 03:38 »
Hello!

I've been using XMPlay for years and I love it.  I use an application (TreeDBNotes Pro) and with it I can create ebooks if I want.  I've made a file containing both manuals from the support XMPlay website (Beginner's Guide and Illustrated Manual) and turned it into an ebook, so like that when I share XMPlay I give the ebook with it, like my mom who has recently discovered just awesome XMPlay is.  I just updated it to add the latest INI mod from yesterday.  So I was pondering if anyone on XMPlay team or XMPlay support website would like to have the ebook too and share it.  I did it in case the support website disappeared or something, so like that there is a hard copy.

Bye!

I can link to it on the first page of the Illustrated Manual, and I guess it can be hosted on the Support Site as well. Could you upload the file somewhere, so other people can check that it works?

I uploaded the file on my gaming blog/gallery on Multiply.  You can upload attachments for the blog there, up to 20MB.

You can always check and see if everything is okay.

I took a quick look at the ebooks and they look pretty good.

It was a bit worrisome downloading a file from an unknown source and find that it is an EXE file (executable program format) instead of a PDF or DOC or some other document format.  Maybe that makes it easier for novices to "run" it, but even then many would not do it for fear of viruses and/or having to over-ride limited user rights warnings that are generated on some Vista and Win7 systems.

The sidebar that is labeled "Tree" which functions the same as PDF sidebar bookmarks can be turned off with the little "X" in the right corner of the tree's title bar.  To turn it back on is confusing.  View>Show/Hide Tree Tabs doesn't do it. Document>Trees>filename doesn't do it.
View>Show/Hide Folders does it.  That's a bit confusing.

I don't want you to think I'm being negative about it... just thought if you could change it slightly, it would be a good thing.

That looks pretty nice! Does it take a lot of time to update it, i.e. is it all manual work?

It's a little strange that the program requires administrator privileges to run, though.

Well, the notes section of TreeDBNotes works like Word, with similar options.  So I copy-pasted everything from the manuals into a tree database, including images and links.  I had to create tables in TreeDBNotes though and copy-paste each entry.  The most tedious part is done since as you can see I've entered everything.  So updating the file is rather easy.  Like for the INI section which was update a few days ago, I just added another line at the bottom of the cell of Boost in the table and copy-pasted the new one CueMark, which took me about 5 seconds.

It's possible the app needs admin right in order to create and modify the ini file that is created after you open the ebook the first time.

I agree with Jimmy Neutron. This should be a PDF.

Ok, I've put it on the Support Site: XMPlay Illustrated Manual - EXE. Are you willing to update this file in the future?

I'm getting the following when trying to download the PDF file:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /files/19/ on this server.

Yes I do make plan to update it whenever necessary.  I could give you my email as well so like that I'd know right away about it and make the changes.  Thanks for putting it on the support website!

It gives the same message for the exe as well.

Must be something about the permissions.  I can tell you that even I can't download the files, so it doesn't have anything to do with having or not having an account.

With version 3.6.0.55 and that secret ini setting being added, I've updated the file and put it on the link I gave earlier: http://mygwrealm.multiply.com/journal/item/17/XMPlay_ebook

Great job guys!

Thank you for the manuals!

Are there any plans for an epub version? ( That's what I call an ebook ;) )

I actually own a kindle3 so mobi is also ok...

vs pdf? eg. fluid text of custom size makes difference on eink. like to read manuals on the subway

You could probably convert the PDF with Calibre:

But, I'm curious why you'd want to read any manual on the subway! :)

I've seen the Midi entry has been updated recently so I added the new stuff.  I also noticed I had forgotten to add the change logs so I added those too.  Multiply are closing their blog section so I've decided to start transferring my blogs on the one I have on Wordpress.com.  So the place to download the file has changed.  Here is the latest update to the ebook:

I've made a new update to the ebook.

I've noticed the very recent additions to the secret settings so I added those.  Also, I've noticed there are some entries I had forgotten to add so I added those.  I made sure to add as well all the authors of each entry, which I had not done.

The latest version of the ebook can be downloaded here:

Also, it'd be great if this time the file would be updated on the support website.  The last update was never put there, only the first version is there.

I'd like to, but due to the filesize, only Ian can do that.

The updated file is now up on the support site. The site's upload size limit has also been increased to simplify future updates :)
