Was wondering if you guys can help me debug something with a webradio stream.

Add this URL into XMPlay:
http://stream.laut.fm/cinemaitaliano

You'll hear some German radio station ID, but after that ID, you should be able to hear the webradio stream.
However, you'll see the song title flash in XMPlay, but the stream will then stop.

I should note that the webradio stream works correctly in Winamp though.

For reference, here's my XMPlay streaming settings:

  • I've got "timeout" and "buffer" set at 10 and "prebuf" at 7.
  • "Restrict rate" is checked.

Update #1: Stream is geo-targeted. (Thanks to Dotpitch for confirming.)  Appears to only work from Europe.  Use a European proxy (try xroxy.com) and enter it in XMPlay's settings under "Miscellaneous > Internet streaming > Proxy". (Make sure "Proxy" is checked and enter in your proxy IP.)

Update #2: Appears to work in certain areas of Europe.  I've tested with a UK proxy and it works. Jace has reported that he's from Europe and that the stream doesn't work for him.

It works properly over here. Do you have the latest stuff version of XMPlay?

It doesn't work for me, even with the newer stuff version.

I just hear the station ID and then the next track in my M3U playlist will play. (This is without the "Auto-reconnect" option checked.)

Dotpitch, can you post your streaming settings so I can cross-check them with mine?

I'm getting this behaviour as well (with Auto-reconnect disabled), just updated to latest stuff (.54)

When I enable Auto-reconnect, it'll just keep looping the intro speak.

Hmm, I believe it might be a problem with the laut.fm site.

Try any of the streams listed here on any player (XMPlay, Winamp, Foobar):
http://www.laut.fm/?v=text

Edit: Looks like the stream is working again!

Good that it works now Smiley. I didn't get the station identifier though, it directly started the music.

Yeah, I guess they removed it because it was annoying Smiley

Another update: this problem is happening again!

Foobar and Winamp are playing the webstream correctly.

Are you still having the problem now? I tried a few of the streams from that page, but they appeared to be working fine. If you are still having the problem, please give a particular URL that isn't working.

Worked for me as well when the intro was dropped, now it (again) does the same as for r with the link in the first post.

<edit>

Grabbed a fresh stuff-version of xmplay.exe, placed it in an empty folder, launched and added the URL. Plays the intro (~22s), changes the song title at around 16s and completely stops after it's finished if Auto-Reconnect is disabled or loops the intro again if enabled.

So doesn't seem like it's a plugin interfering. Firewall set to allow all transfer to/from XMPlay.

Are you getting the intro every time? I'm not getting it most of the time, but when I do, the music does start afterwards.

What does the General info window show when the intro plays? Does it look any different when the music plays?

Yep, intro every time. Can't really say what info window says when music is playing (as I can't get to the music), but during the intro:

Title laut.fm/cinemaitaliano
File cinemaitaliano
Path http://stream.laut.fm
Format MPEG2 layer 3
Bit rate 128 kbps
Sample rate 22050 hz
Channels 2
Output 48000 hz - stereo - 16 bit
(22050 hz - stereo)
DS mix software

<edit>

Also tried without DirectSound or forcing sample rate, no difference.

Getting the same as Jace stated.

I'm guessing it's a problem with the webstream server, but I am still able to at least partially play the stream for a few minutes in Winamp and Foobar before the connection is cut.

Over here the intro (the two times out of 400 I actually got it) is 44.1 kHz, like the rest of the stream. The transition from intro to stream is seamless.

The Shoutcast server will stream an intro file without re-encoding it, so it should have the same bitrate, samplerate and channel count as the actual stream. If the intro file doesn't match the stream, there will be a problem. Could you (Jace, r) write the failing stream to disk and upload that?

That explains it. XMPlay will end a stream when it encounters a change in format, and it looks like the intro that you're hearing has a sample rate of 22050 Hz, while the music is 44100 Hz (or it is here). It sounds like Dotpitch and I are getting a different intro then (when we get one). Perhaps it's geo-targeted; it is still in German though, so perhaps not. What IP are you connecting to, eg. what do you get if you run "ping stream.laut.fm"?

Getting the same ping as Jace.

Good to know that we've at least narrowed down to issue to a change in sample rate!

Listening to the file Jace posted, it's definitely geo-targeted. They warn Jace he's connecting from a country they're not allowed to broadcast to. r, where are you connecting from?

Canada. That sucks that geo-targeting is in use.

Okay, just tried out a UK proxy in XMPlay and the stream is working fine!
Thank you xroxy.com and Dotpitch for translating that German disclaimer!

Also, thanks for enlightening me about XMPlay's proxy feature!  Now I can listen to BBC Radio streams in higher quality with the UK proxy! Smiley
