I'm curious as to how many people on these boards use XMPlay as their main media player. I know I didn't when I first came across it but now I use it for everything I can.

There are probably loads more but I only know of a few.

Rah3D

I use XMPlay for all compressed audio files, such as MP3 or OGG, but I use Mplayer2 for AVIs, WAVs and such stuff, simply because it loads faster... And because I don't want to watch my movies on XMPlay :D

I may start using mplayer2.exe for MIDIs again, since the in_midi.dll just decided to puke on me.  (Can't use the method KD described.)

Well... although the plugins stability is somewhat questionable, try the in_dm.dll plugin and see how it goes, I did'nt play with the settings too much, but the following seems to work.

The plugin

*don't need this piccy here anymore*

I probably should have put this in before, but MS Synth is no longer an option, although it was when I originally set up XMPlay for MIDI...  :-/

Try the the alternate method I just posted - that's if you don't mind having no pause / volume control... and you have to press stop twice... ::) And of course playing MIDIs like this removes the visulizations, too.

About the Microsoft Synthesizer, make sure you check "Show all DirectMusic devices" and uncheck "Disable DirectMusic support", and then restart XMPlay.

I did answer XMPlay but I must specify this a bit.
I have a rather old setup, Cyrix 6x86 cpu, no MMX or none of that fancy stuff :)
XMPlay is simply the best player for modules although
the .XM frequency table is a bit off when compared to ft2.
I also use XMPlay for playing .OGGs and .MP3s when I already have XMPlay running but I switch to WinHemp when (note: not "if") XMPlay crahes. I also can't rely on XMPlay when dealing with big playlists or Internet streams simply because the otherwise very lovely player is so tend to crash every 30 minutes and when it crashes I lose the playlist or wake up at night in panic because I can't hear me Nectarine playing. There is no obvious reason for the crashing: At first XMPlay is performing great but then suddenly it just performs an illegal operation, half the time in the beginning of a track (ANY track: stream, module) and the other half in the middle of a track. And usually when it performs the illegal operation it still plays the current track to the end before going silent. I haven't been complaining before because I've always waited for the next version and hoped it to be more stable. Oof.. I just noticed I got a bit lost of the subject.. But let's continue while we're doing so good at it :) Just wanted to get Ian's attention I guess (yes, there are better ways but forgive me, I've got cold and I'm tired) and maybe get some help with this. With XMPlay 1.7 there are no problems of this nature; Are there known incompatibility issues with XMPlay2 and older setups or cyrix setups? What is causing this? What is preventing XMPlay2 become my only media player? 'Nuff said, no?

Hmmm how about MCI / MIDI Mapper? I added an alternate setup for it...

Beam me up scotty

Brightguy

That was put up quick! :)

But using "MCI / MIDI Mapper" still gives me long pauses between songs.  (Even with all the H/W resets checked.)  I thought I had them both working once...  I'll play around with it, but for now "DM / MIDI Mapper" is working fine for me.  Of course Alpha would need DirectMusic options for that... again, double-check that you have them enabled in the DirectMusic tab.

Keltic Danor

Yup, I thought I'd put in one that does'nt need DM, although I'd be baffled if there were no DM devices.

Anyhoo, there are the three setup's available for the midi plugin now, each has there own limitation but at least everyone should be able to use it now.

Retro

Raina: Xmplay crashes on my computer too, sometimes. Not so often though as it used to do in past few versions. If I keep it maximized, chances are good that it will not crash.

I have win98SE. Athlon800, 256ram etc.

And Xmplay is my main media player :)

Ian @ un4seen

Raina & Retro, can you please send whatever info Windows gives on the crashes... if you have DrWatson logs, even better... basically, the more info you can give, the better :)

Couldn't reproduce the crash right now. XMPlay crashes when you least expect it. But it is very rare nowadays. I'll look into it when it crashes next time :)

Brightguy

XMPlay will sometime crash over here too, but not too often.  I'll send/post the error message if it happens again.  It's usually something like XMPlay caused an invalid page fault in XMPLAY.EXE...  Most of the time it's probably a plugin's fault anyway... :)

Jace

Uh.. I got that too today.. In the middle of a long MP3 playing session.. I thought about taking a screenshot, but it was all in finnish.. ;)))
So I kinda didn't take it.. Would you want even a finnish version of it?
Gah.. never post when tired.. *bedtime*

Fraggie

Hi Ian. If you want to crash XMPlay, you can do this: get some MODs into the playlist, open MOD Pattern Display and keep pressing Next track quickly (if the files are archived you can slow down). [Page Down] also does the trick. :)

(And I do not have any lousy plugins installed...)

Ian @ un4seen

Jacer, I'm half Finnish, but any language is fine - the numbers are the important bit ;D

Cheers Fraggie, I'll look into it.

Ian is half-Finnish!  Wow, that's pretty much the third bit of knowledge I have about him, the first two being that he lives in London, and he is 27 (or maybe now 28 ) years old.

Ian, write an autobiography!  Please?

Wow! :D.. I didn't know that either - no wonder he's so cool! I'm a finn myself ;D

Puhutkos yhtään suomea, Ian? ;)

Brightguy

An autobiography?  Now that's a great idea! ;D

Or at least how about an "about the author" feature in XMPlay, or the readme text?  Seriously... :)

Okay.. I got it to crash! (Actually.. I think the glory for that should go to microsoft..)
At the moment I was doing nothing in it, it was stopped, and a Flash program was using the soundcard (in case that is actually something relevant), and a bmpfolder was used as skin (same to that).
I have Windows 98 (w/ LiteStep!) running..
For more details, ask =P

ed. The pic won't be needed anymore then :P

Ian @ un4seen

Coincidentally, KD had that very crash a few days ago - it's already fixed :)

Kynes, minun suomea on paska :)

Oleg/BG, you'll have to wait for the book ;D

Okay.. While we're at it:
Got this one when song changed while I was refreshing skin, and XMPlay was not visible..
And I was able to repeat that..

Which means:
a) I have too much time on my hands
b) One more thing which someone could look into
