Plug in Developement

HI all, good to be back.
I have a question, and I hope that it finds a sympathetic ear.
Basically I have an Idea, ahem and it is my idea and no one elses (OK no more bad monty python)
is it possible that some kind plugin writer can find some way to pick up the sound being played by XMplay (or other SW like Q3)  and route it to a parallel port (while still allowing playback normally)?  The idea being to pick up these pulses and (using some form of relay ) have a variety of lights react?
I was envisaging assigning a set of frequencies to various pin pairs?
Any ideas

You can use NTONYX Virtual Audio Cable to capture the sound. It's a virtual output device and sends the sound to its virtual input device which you can use any program that can use your soundcard's linein.  The free trial version adds some noise after some time, but in this case i guess that's not a big problem. Now you just need a software to translate the sound to something your light effect device understands. Can't help with this atm.
