Resampling: feature suggestion (topic changed)

Hi there!

I'd like to to some tests... for this reason I need to create .wav files with XMPlay with high resolution (ideally 24bit/96kHz sampling rate). Adjusting settings in Device Setup (Sampling rate, bit depth) didn't do what I expected. the .wav files created by XMPlay were always 16bit/44.1kHz.

Any ideas how to change this?

What format are the files you're trying to write to disk? 24/32-bit output (and non-normalized WAV writing) is only supported for the formats that XMPlay decodes itself - MPEG/OGG/MODs.

Thanx for your answer. I wanted to compare different format's encoding capabilities on high resolution (24/32bit) low volume (0 ... -150dB) music. The first format I tried was musepack (.MPC) IIRC with newest winamp plugin.

I just tried with mp3. Adjusting bit resolution (24bit/32bit wav writing) works fine, but adjusting sampling rate doesn't work at all. (It stays 44100Hz) no matter what I set it (the mp3 was encoded at the same samplingrate).

Maybe I caused this by something I don't know ATM, but if XMPlay is supposed to refuse resampling, maybe this is something to "look into". Most sound cards resample 44.1kHz signals internally to 48kHz in a bad way causing aliasing. If this is done by software in a decent way it'll sound better.

XMplay plays OGG and MP3 the sample rate they are encoded at or if that rate isn't supported by soundcard, at the best rate that is supported (guess if I had an SB 2.0 somewhere in my computer, i could play everything on 22050 :P)

Thanx. If it's like this, I'd like to suggest free choosable resampling (should use decent quality algorithms) as feature.

Most soundcards (e.g. Creative, AC'97) resample 44.1 kHz internally to 48 kHz before DAC conversion, using crappy algorithms like linear interpolation, introducing aliasing.

FYI: If you want to hear the difference, create two high frequency wav files (with CoolEdit or something similar), e.g. 5000 - 20000 Hz sine sweeps, one of them 48kHz sampling rate, the other 44.1kHz, otherwhise identical and play them back. If you don't notice a difference you have a decent soundcard and don't need this feature. (Or your hearing is badly damaged)

This is somehow offtopic, but could be interesting, so I change the topic of this thread.
