With older versions of XMPlay, there was an .ini file that was easy to backup to restore settings, but as of the latest version, it has disappeared, with the settings no doubt moved to the Registry instead.

Is there a way of saving the settings as an .ini once again, if only for backup and restore purposes?

XMPlay still stores its settings in XMPlay.ini. It's either located in %APPDATA%\XMPlay if "per-user config" is enabled in the settings, or next to xmplay.exe otherwise. This may not be instantly obvious on modern systems if XMPlay is installed to "Program Files (x86)". In this case, you will have to click on the "compatibility files" button in Explorer to show the file. Generally it's better to use the per-user configs on a modern system (XP and newer).
