some mp4 files are audio and some are video.

is there a way to tell with bass?

Unfortunately, BASS doesn't currently provide that information. If you would like to prevent BASS playing MP4 videos, that is possible via the BASS_CONFIG_MF_VIDEO option (set it to 0) when using Media Foundation to play MP4 files, or BASS_CONFIG_MP4_VIDEO when using BASS_AAC.
