understanding ASIO

Good day.

A question from a newbie to ASIO.
If I set xmplay output to be ASIO4ALL, does this mean that Windows sound settings in Control Panel become irrelevant?
Thank you for your attention.

ASIO4All is not a hardware ASIO driver. Under the hood it uses WaveRT, which is part of Windows and thus some (but maybe not all) options from the control panel will still apply. For example, anything regarding shared device access will not apply because WaveRT always uses the device exclusively.
Only an ASIO driver supplied by the vendor of your soundcard can bypass the Windows mixer.
