Indeed, what a wonderful Christmas present... ;D I'm probably going to stay with Neutron but that new default skin surely is an upgraded from the... slightly dated looks of XMPlay 3. Way to go!

Wow!

I'm really happy with this update. Crossfading, Hue, and  "edit in OpenMPT" was huge for me, and this fixed the only Wine problem I had, the panels on skins like Zeroxygen - Mindmirror— my main skin. I don't really think the new default skin looks all that great, but that's just me, I'll just… instantly switch to a different skin. Anyway, big up skinned players!

NICE!

However:
Windows Defender currently detects xmplay40.zip as a virus.
Type: Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml

Can this somehow be fixed?

It is possible to allow the program in defender and redownload it without it being killed off.

It seems like 90% of all programs these days are "Wacatac.B!ml"... it's a useless detection. You can submit a false positive report to Microsoft so that they whitelist the executable.

I figured it was time for something a little bigger and simpler with 4.0, but different people like different things, so indeed it's good to have the option of changing the skin. The final XMPlay 3 default skin (with added ext.playlist queue support) is downloadable, for anyone who would prefer to stick with that.

Well that's not good! I've just re-zipped the files and that seems to have stopped Defender complaining for now. Hopefully it'll stay that way. Please try re-downloading and see if the new xmplay40.zip file is working for you.

Thanks for version 4 of your great little XMPLAY.

I agree with Michael however i also dont like the new skin.. preferred the old version 3.. and have downloaded it.
"IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT" springs to mind.

Didnt have the virus issue like some other people.
Have noticed it takes longer to load than the old version 3.

Unfortunately, MS now flags it as a different trojan. Even though I trust the file, unfortunately Windows still prevents the average person from downloading it.

Given that the old skin was way too small for most modern displays, I would say it was very much broken. The playlist panel was tiny. There's so many things where the default skin had to be improved on.

There's a chance that this will fix itself once enough people have installed the new executable. There's no official explanation what those names such as "Wacatac.B!ml" stand for but given that it shows up so often, it's probably based on the file's reputation (i.e. few people have installed it => potentially dangerous).

Just came to say thank you for the 4.0 release!

Found an old harddrive with lots of modules on it from the Amiga-era and onwards through S3Ms and XMs - just frickin awesome!

And to see the community is still alive is amazing!

Thank you for bringing us a new major version of such a beautiful music player!

I agree with the rest about the new default skin, my main disappointment with it is the typical flat look, no matter how much it is pushed everywhere I still consider it the bane of creativity (and usability). Still, since we have a good amount of skins to choose from, it's not a huge problem - I don't think many people used the default skin back in the XMPlay 3x days either.

Hello Ian, I would also like to thank you for releasing XMPlay 4: thanks!
I've been a user for over 10 years but I've been silent, as per the saying "if it ain't broke, don't complain it".
Before discovering XMPlay I was a Winamp user. I loved Winamp 2. As for Winamp 5, not so much.

There is much to praise about XMPlay. It is small and efficient, yet highly capable and backward compatible. Without the MIDI soundfonts it weighs in at under 1 MB of disk space. XMPlay is humiliating all other music players that weigh more and do less. Including Winamp.

Finally, thanks for making available the default skin from XMPlay 3: I am not a big fan of the flat skin of version 4. Maybe someone could make it less flat by using shadows and gradients? Sorry not me, because I still haven't graduated from MS Paint. ;D

I think the skinning competition should be opened again, now that the skinning kit has evolved a lot since its last version.
Quite frankly, Escape and Metrocity were great candidates to become part of 4.x.
Of course, I will always respect Ian's intentions :)

Am I the only one who likes new default skin?  ???

I was using Neutron skin for many years and recently went on to Innocuous skin but with new version I'm happy with default as it has anything I want!  ;D

I think we could just go with Neutron as the sensible default, since people have been requesting that for years.

The new default skin is quite okay when it comes to the layout, but Neutron also manages that, while being much more pleasing to the eyes. It also responds well to the new Hue adjustment feature.

Funny you say that, as the new skin was inspired by the Innocuous skin :)

I can understand some people not liking the new skin, given it's so different to the previous skin, but I felt it was time for something a bit bigger and a bit simpler/cleaner. The skin also needed to work well with the new hue and light/dark options, and preferably the auto-mini option too.

Let me chime in. Thank you very much for XMPlay 4. It's been worth the wait. As a long time user, I've become quite attached to ver3, but ver4 is simply great. I've had issues with winamp-plugins not exiting properly in ver3, forcing the xmplay-process to keep on running. But no such issues with ver4.
