XMPlay takes almost 2 days to read external SSD

I'm actually a Winamp user, but XMPlay has better sound quality (ASIO), so I switched to it. Every time I add external hard drives (SSD) using the folder-subfolder function, XMPlay takes an infinite amount of time to add them. The external SSD contains around 15,000 songs. In Winamp, this is no problem at all. No matter how many songs there are, whether 100 or 100,000, Winamp adds the folder contents in seconds. Even with very old versions of Winamp. Since I frequently change external music SSDs, this is pretty annoying. Is there a solution in this regard? Oh, and when XMPlay has finally read all the songs from the external SSD, it takes an infinitely long time for XMPlay to start. That really annoys me. That's medieval.

That is pretty slow! It shouldn't normally take that long for that number of files. Are the drives connected via USB 3 or something slower? And do you have many input plugins installed, particularly Winamp plugins? By default, XMPlay will check the contents of each file (including inside archives) to make sure it's playable before adding it to the list, which could require every plugin having a look at the file. You can try disabling that via the "Verify file content" setting in the "Playlist" options page. XMPlay will still look inside archives then but will only check the file extensions instead of the contents.

No, right now, I don't have any plugins installed. The drives are connected via USB 3. All files (mostly MP3) are playable. I even tried different versions of WIN: XP, 10, 11. It's always the same annoying problem. With XP XMPlay always crashes while adding after some time. Even on different machines. So it's an XMPlay thing. When the playlist is empty XMPlay starts without problems. When all files are added XMPlay needs 13 Minutes to start.

OK, thanx for the advice. I deactivated the "Verify file content" setting in the "Playlist" option. But I really don't think that it will make this proggy faster. :-)

To narrow down where that delay is coming from, please try adding the files to the library instead of the playlist (press F6 for the library), and see if you still get the start delay then.

Please also confirm your PC specs, eg. CPU and RAM. I've never heard of delays like these before, but if it's a low-spec retro system then that could partially explain them. Then again, a low-spec retro system wouldn't have USB 3 ports, so I guess that isn't it. It's puzzling.

Here's an update for you to try, including some tweaks to make large playlist loading faster. It'll hopefully help with your starting delay problem, and perhaps the external drive adding slowness too.
