XMPlay doesn't support UltraTracker files itself, so I think there must be a plugin handling the file? You can check that in the "Decoders" options page, where the current decoder/plugin is preselected. It may also say in the "General" info window.

Although the name is similar, "libxmp" doesn't actually have anything to do with XMPlay. It's a separate MOD library:

    https://github.com/libxmp/libxmp

If UltraTracker files aren't working well with that then you could try them with the xmp-openmpt plugin instead.
