I have an ASIO-capable soundcard (M-Audio Revo) and have it selected as the output device under Options.  But as far as I can tell, I'm not getting ASIO output.  Is there a way in which I can do so, please?  Of course most other players need a plugin for this purpose, but XMPlay doesn't seem to go in for output plugins.  Many thanks.

XMPlay does, currently, not have ASIO support.

Thanks for the bad news!  In that case perhaps I could request that this be given consideration as a possible future development, please.

If you have a Revo, you don't need ASIO.  The audio quality of that card is such that in that context, ASIO adds absolutely nothing to playback quality.  In fact, the only cards that NEED ASIO to sound good are the Creative Labs garbage.  As you likely know, I have a Revo and I can't discern any difference between ASIO playback and non-ASIO playback on players that *do* support it.

And I'm picky. Smiley

I can't agree - I notice a big improvement in sound quality in Winamp with ASIO output, hence my interest in the matter. Surely the idea is that ASIO bypasses the Windows mixer and thus allows the soundcard's capabilities full rein? But in any case I wasn't looking for a discussion of the merits or otherwise of ASIO, just for news of whether XMPlay is any nearer to supporting it, please.

That's because the sound system in Tinamp is a piece of garbage - and has been for a VERY long time.  Try it with foobar and you'll get different results.

The Windows kmixer hype is mostly just that except where CL cards are concerned and it only matters there because of poor hardware AND driver design by that vendor  XP SP1 improved matter greatly for competent sound card and driver designers, not the least in part because M-Audio themselves had a hand in it.  I can say all this because I've owned a variety of sound cards by several different vendors and have tested them to satisfy my own curiosity.  Like I said, I'm picky.  you can take or leave the information - all I do is present it. Roj - but you aren't providing me with the information I've requested, nor are you in a position to do so.

If the question is directed to one person only, wouldn't it make sense to send it as a private message? Grin

Private message? People regularly use the forum to ask questions of the author, and he is usually kind enough to answer them. It's just that my question is specific and I prefer not to be sidetracked.

I guess it could happen in future, but there are still no plans for ASIO support at present Smiley

I am not providing a direct answer to the question specified since as you correctly noted I am not in a position to do so.

I am however stating that the request is moot because the feature is irrelevant to the needs stated.

Whether you choose to ignore that rather obvious inference is up to you and only you.

Roj - I didn't state any needs, I asked a factual question, for which Ian's answer suffices. Evidently he considers it a valid question.

Certainly, on one condition:

Do please try to stop being a pompous schoolmarm whenever someone's forum behavior doesn't suit you.  It tends to get tedious across multiple forums.

As would I.

Fortunately, I *am* a mod on one of the aforementioned multiple forums. <BFEG>

And on that note, gentle readers, ends my participation in this aspect of the discussion.
