Note that it is possible for plugins to reject a file based on the extension if they want to. You'd have to be careful about that with the AAC plugin though, eg. Shoutcast streams have no extension.

I believe file extensions should exist for human convenience, not for the software! Discarding files that don't follow somebody's naming conventions is ridiculous. It's only a name!

(And since XMPlay doesn't rely on file names and provides interface for verifing files by content, why should plugins not use it and create problems?)

Fraggie: That "somebody's naming convention" as you put it is the way all versions of Windows handle filenames/types; it's not like it's some random guy in Nebraska's naming convention.

Anyway, in this case, XMPlay right now adding completely unplayable PNGs for me is quite the inconvenience. It's not the first time a plugin does this, I think I've had 4 or 5 plugins do it.

Also, without a banlist (which I think could be a good addition in any case), there's no good solution to prevent for example WMVs (that have a playable audio stream) from slipping through. Some albums contain accompanying videos in such formats, and it's quite logical to keep those files in the same directory.

Is the development of this plugin still ongoing?
Playing MPC files using it seems to cause XMPlay to crash very often, sometimes together with a sudden loud noise.

Stupid question maybe, but are you using the latest version of the plugin? I haven't had any playback problems with the latest two versions, and I listen to quite a bit of MPC files. Maybe not as much as you though.

Could this plugin be updated to support the new SV* stream format please?

If you're referring to SV8, that's still technically in beta. I wouldn't recommend supporting it until they are confidant for a final release.

Sorry for the impromptu bump.
I just experienced this type of problem with a few MPCs.  The MPC will play fine until the end of the song, where you could hear a couple of static noises followed by XMPlay crashing.

I'm not sure if Sebastian still maintains this plugin, but I thought I would try.

[Edit]
I'm currently using the Winamp MPC plugin from Musepack.net:
http://musepack.net/index.php?pg=win

This works for me.

Have you tried the "rev.1" update available from the XMPlay webpage? If that doesn't fix it, please upload an example troublesome MPC file to have a look at here...

Hi Ian,

I did try the rev.1 plugin, but experienced the same problem noted above.

I am in the process of uploading one of the MPC files in the FTP incoming folder.

I also just checked the MPC stream profile of the track and it is as follows:
Stream Version 7.0,   Profile: 'Unstable/Experimental'

Hope that helps.

Thanks.

Ah yes, there was a little problem with error checking that could result in a crash. I've put an update (rev.1a) up on the XMPlay page.

I have issues with this plugin: when I load .mpc files with replaygain info I get strange walues in the auto amp (1576 or such) and the file is played silently. Is this a bug or I am missing something?

ok, it works now. just a question: with flac files the replaygain info appears in the general and in the message tabs, with .mpc ones only in the general tab. another thing to fix or for mpc files replaigain isn't a tag?

Maaaybe I was too fast. It's true I can hear the music now, but comparing with the original file the volume is way too high. I mean: I have both .flac (with replaygain) and .mpc (with replaygain), but .mpc suonds really higher than .flac, like it was amplifying instead of attenuating... both are compressed from .wav using foobar last. Really strange, or is it how lossy stuff treats replaygain? I'm puzzled.

Does XMPlay actually use the Replaygain information when playing the MPC file? (Tick 'Reset on new track' and check whether XMPlay actually reset the amplification slider to a new value.) Perhaps it just forgets to read the tag Wink.

It's already checked it, and xmplay changes the amplification on opening new files. T_T so what can it be?
