bassmod, libbassmod and linking..

I'm trying to figure out how to link to bassmod.so under linux.  Normally, there's supposed to be an archive lib (.a) or other object file to link to, but there isn't one in bass16m.zip
I'm a bit of a newbish programmer here, so what am I missing?

btw, as I didn't make it clear before, I'm trying to compile the libbassmod.c source file.
