VST plugins can now be used with XMPlay, as a VST bridge has been produced for Winamp which works in XMPlay. It's available here (install in Winamp, then copy to your XMPlay plugins folder like any other Winamp DSP plugin):

There are some nice free Kjaerhus VST plugins to try out here (install to a folder you create, e.g. C:\Program files\VST):

The free Kjaerhus compressor on the web page I identified above gives pleasing results. These are the best free ones I've found so far. A more sophisticated, paid-for version can be found on their website. As you  might expect, pro VST plugins are pretty costly (hundreds of $$), so I haven't tried most of them.

I won't be using this myself, but it's cool nevertheless. Here's a good, commercial, compressor.

Here's a good website for browsing and searching a varied selection of VST plugins:

Is there a way to apply the VST effect only on a particular [midi output]channel?
