MP3 bit rates where is silence

Hi!

This isn't a totally BASS question, but is it common that MP3 encoders encode frames using larger frames where nearly all there is is silence??? :-\

The same section:
Sample:

Bit rates:

You can download the clip here.

When encoding VBR, a smart encoder should use 32 kbps for silence. For CBR encoding, all frames have the same bitrate. The only difference might be the usage of long vs. short blocks or joint stereo frames (M/S vs. SS).

Tried a couple of settings with Lame 3.96.1:
For example VBR 32-320kbps:

Code: [Select]
-b 32 -h -m j -V 0 -B 320 -q 0 -c -o -k --vbr-new
But the result is the same:

Altough it did use some small packets at the beginning and at the end... :(

Coul you please use a decent setting and try again? Use something like -V5 --vbr-new -c -o.

Hmmm, result:

That would be nice If I could set a full range from 32-320kbps, or even fremes with total silence could be encoded as 0 sized (or some very small size)... ::)

I put real silence into the sound clip, and now it is encoded as "smallest frames", with both command line options.

(My config (Sebastian Mares's options give similar result)):

Thanx!
