Windows Media 9 is out as a RC, and it has variable bitrate and lossless formats.  They say they're mathematically lossless, which makes little sense because would they be factually lossy?  But my main question is whether BASSWMA is ready for it.  If it is, then XMPlay should be, too, that's why I am interested.

Yes, the current BASSWMA (and XMPlay) can play WM9 VBR/lossless streams if the you have the WM9 modules installed.

The encoding side is not possible with the current BASSWMA though. Support has been added, but not released yet - waiting for the WM9 final release 1st
