Alrighty, here's a little background on my setup:
XMPlay installed on Windows 2000 Pro on my desktop.
Abyss Webserver installed on Windows 2000 Pro on my media server.
Both are essentially normal desktop PCs.
Both attached to a 10/100 router so they can talk to each other.
Both have static IP addresses, no DHCP.
I keep my MP3s on the media server so they don't take up room on my desktop.

I just punch http ://192.168.1.xxx/music/whatever.mp3 into XMPlay, and it plays or adds it to the playlist. Simple. The LAN is fast enough that it loads like it was on my desktop's hard drive.

A week ago, my DSL modem died and I added a dialup connection to my desktop machine so I could still check my email. The LAN is separate, I can still pull up files from the media box with Firefox, IE, and VLC. It works the same as it always has.

But not with XMPlay.
Even after deleting the config file and playlist (xmplay.ini and xmplay.pls), then re-adding files, it's still insisting that it can't reach the server. At least, I'm assuming, since there's no error logging. I double-click the first in a list of MP3s, and it goes down the list instantaneously adding the red lines until it hits the end. It's going so fast I don't see how it could actually be re-checking the files.

What's wrong?
Is there another config file, maybe a server cache somewhere that I missed? Has XMPlay somehow decided to try to use the dialup connection to try and pull files over the LAN? (It doesn't pop up the connection box, so probably not)
The Dead Files section of the preferences window doesn't seem to work with URLs, only local files.

EDIT: It also does the same thing with internet streams, I tried with DI.fm and a couple of local radio stations.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?

I think XMPlay is trying to get the files over your default network connection, which would be dailup. Since there is no connection, the file is unavailable and is marked as dead. Apparently XMPlay doesn't check the other network connections.
Try using Windows' File Sharing: share the entire music folder on your server, and map it as a network drive (at X: for example). Then let XMPlay add all the files at X:, instead of via the http adress.

Windows filesharing does fix the local network problem. However, XMplay is still skipping over internet streams (DI.fm, etc). Is there a workaround for that?

Just a guess, but if you've not already done so, you could try disabling the "Proxy" option ("Miscellaneous" page).

Hi there,

I'm experiencing the same problem for past 2 days. It started from my own radio, modules.fm (.pls file) - it got an 'ICY 401' error. That was understandable, because stream was down. But when it started working again, I was still getting the same error. Then I've checked several DI.fm stations (.pls files) and XMPlay behaved like the files were dead. Nectarine though was working fine (.m3u file). But after the reboot, it was "dead" as well. Now any file that needs to be get by http is marked as dead :/

I've copied my whole XMPlay folder and tested on different PC - it works fine. Therefore I have no idea what's going on

You are not having the same problem, you're using ShoutCast.

So you can play your own stream from a different pc with the same XMPlay? Can you play streams in Windows Media Player or any other player? Is your firewall working properly?

Yes.

Yes. I tried Winamp 2.7 and all streams work fine.

I use standard WinXP firewall. I haven't changed anything in its settings for a long time.

Something, somewhere went horribly wrong and now my XMPlay can't play anything that comes from http :/

If you rename xmplay.ini to something else (backup.ini), XMPlay will start clean, does that help? What version do you have? Does it happen with MP3, OGG and AAC+ streams?

I've checked Nectarine streams - nothing works. Just like I said, XMPlay can't play anything that comes from http.

Are you sure that the Windows firewall isn't blocking internet access for XMPlay? It sounds like something is blocking internet access.

You could also try going to XMPlay's Miscellaneous options and ticking the "Proxy" box (leave the text box empty), or if it's already ticked, un-ticking it

Yeah, I'm sure. I even disabled it for a while and it didn't help.

Try to reset all your network settings with this command:

netsh winsock reset

and then set your network up again

The Windows firewall does not block any outgoing traffic, just incoming packets.

The exact same settings do work on another pc, so XMPlay is set up correctly. Other players work, so there's no issue with the network connection. Using the internet settings provided by Windows doesn't work, while that does work in all other programs. It's like something has blocked XMPlay specifically.

Can you open "http://ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/groups/kahvicollective/kahvi247a_coax-ivnon.ogg" or "http://www.ah.fm/192k.m3u" directly from the Open URL box? How long does XMPlay take to mark a stream as dead, 3 seconds or more like 30 seconds? And what about streams on the local network or on localhost adresses?

They don't work either.

It's... instant. Less than a second.

And what about streams on the local network or on localhost adresses?

I tried http://localhost/test/test.mp3 and it doesn't work.

Ok, so XMPlay has absolutely no network access and any attempt is directly stopped. Sounds like an active firewall, I can't think of anything else.
Could you try the 'stuff version' of XMPlay in a new directory on its own? And perhaps rename xmplay.exe to xmplay3.exe?
