Play WMA files from BuyMusic.com?
« on: 12 Aug '03 - 00:16 »
I've recently bought a few favorite tracks from BuyMusic.com. I can play them on some software audio players but not on others. The only software player that BuyMusic.com claims to support is Windows Media Player. I'd rather use XMPlay, but I can't make it accept these specially protected WMA tracks that BuyMusic.com sells. Does anyone know of a solution (other than use Windows Media Player?

Thanks.

You can use the in_wm plugin to play those files.

I did a quick search and found it here.

Thanks, Brightguy. I'm encouraged that this might work after all. One question: How do I install this plugin? I have only the one winamp plugin (xmpwma.dll). I tried just putting the new in_wm.dll plugin in the same directory as xmplay.exe, but that didn't do anything.

Thanks again for your help.

You still can't play the WMA files?  You can check that the plugin was installed successfully by opening the Options and Stuff window, and selecting the tab "Plugins & Skin".  It should be listed as Microsoft WINAMP/WMA plug-in v1.00 (x86).

By the way, I have a suggestion.  Now in 2.8 there's no way to tell which plugin is being used, or if a plugin is being used at all.  Maybe that feature could be added back in?

It turns out that the plugin was installed after all. However, it still doesn't permit me to play these WMA files I bought from BuyMusic.com. It seems they're copyright-protected somehow. They play on Windows Media Player and Real Player, but not on most other software players. Curiously, they will play on an old version of UltraPlayer. I'd like to play them on XMPlay, if possible, but maybe the scheme can't be defeated.

They may use propriatory MS code in them. I don't know if XMPlay supports *all* versions of WMA.

Just found this while Googling. Keep in mind that this is only one person's experience: http://www.scriptygoddess.com/archives/004057.php

I figured there was something seriously proprietary going on, but I can't figure out why a three-year-old version of UltraPlayer handles these WMAs just fine.

RE: the BuyMusic.com complaints. I'm not too surprised, really. I hope they'll work some of the rough edges off soon. They've dealt fairly with me so far, though I wish the supported devices weren't so limited.

Thanks for your comments, at any rate.

Ok, lemme explain my whole rationale for screaming "please," here. I'm pretty up on what plugins I have installed, so unless there's something majorly screwy goin on, I can pretty much tell from the song playing what the program is using. The feature I really want is for the "Plugin:" dropdown menu upon going to the "Plugins & Skin" tab in the Options panel to already be at the plugin [when applicable] that's currently in use so that I can just go through and click Config knowing it'll be for what's playing.

It's nothing very big, but it would save me one step in a day of already filled with hundreds of iterations of panels and dialogs and thousands of clicks. That consideration was much appreciated in the older versions and since I have a format-varied playlist, I miss that ability a bit.
