Suggestion for File Registering.
« on: 26 Feb '03 - 19:12 »
I suppose this could go in the 2.7 suggestions thread, but I wanted opinions on this.

Currently, XMPlayer-registered files appear as "XMPlayable File".  It would be possible to change those according to the file extensions registered to XMPlay yourself, but this suggestion is for the benfit of those who either do not know how to modify the descriptions, or are too lazy to find out. ;D

My suggestions are as follows:
  • .WAV -> Windows WAVE Audio File
  • .MP1/2/3 -> MPEG Layer I/II/III Audio File
  • .IT -> Impulse Tracker MOD
  • .XM -> FastTracker 2.x MOD
  • etc

Edit: Damn grammar.  Always causing problems.

This was one of my very first suggestions when I first came to this forum.  The funny thing is now I don't think it's as important as I did before.  (But still support it.) :)

Yes, and since all are registered individually (unlike WinDamp, which puts a million extensions into one file association rule...), it shouldn't be a big problem to name the registered files individually as well, at least the natively supported ones.

(Hereby I'd like to mention I'd really prefer a native CDA support as in BASS...)

I got tired of the single filetype thingamabob, so I made icons for all natively supported filetypes plus a few other common ones + a reg file that registers these filetypes for you.

Here's a pic of both the variants (the oogly non-alpha icons are for non-XP systems as they don't fully support alphablended icons):

Let me know if you want the stuff.

And yeah I know, they don't look that fancy. I don't have the patience for pixel pushing the same way I did in the old DOS days.

Suggestion for icons: make the "MID" and the "MIDI" ones the same - the file types are identical, it's just like the difference between .htm and .html (identical contents, just an extra letter on the extension). Oh, and e-mail me the icons and I'll add them to a utility I'm putting together for XMPlay (icon-changer wotsit).

E-mails sent. Also fixed the MID/MIDI thing. I am ashamed to admit I probably was drunk when I did that, which is strange since I don't drink.

Afraid not. I made these for my own use, and I (you may have noticed) like stuff to be as small as possible, so only 16x16 :)

Also, the icons look decent when expanded to 32x32.

While this thread is bumped, I would like to bring attention back to the original discussion...

Would people be willing to have Ian use multiple filetypes instead of one, big "XMPlayable"? This should be a simple addition/modification to the code, and not inducive to bloating.

I didn't take part in this discussion before, but now that I think of it, yea, it's a good idea. Just voted for the first one :).
