Associated filetypes

The one thing I hate about media players is their hijacking of icons, and XMPlay is the worst offender. Naturally I want the player to play automatically, but it’s impossible to keep the original/preferred icons of WAV, MP3, FLAC… etc., when associating filetypes with XMPlay. Using Default Programmes Editor to restore icons doesn’t work with this player, and I don’t want one icon for all audio types (Options). So is there any way to avoid this without disassociating filetypes?
