Focusrite Scarlett use without ASIO

Designing a playback application to work with a Focusrite Scarlett and am getting occasional no audio output, but the file is playing. I know the Scarlett would prefer to be using ASIO communication, but wondering if others have noticed this dropout with regular BASS. And, if there is a setting change needed to help the device work reliably. Thank you.
